Comprehensive design and analysis software

The intuitive structure design software allows engineers to design structural models with 1D, 2D and 3D finite elements, however large or complex. With inbuilt form finding routines and API links to your own programs, GSA Suite allows you to create the optimum structure. It will then design your steelwork and concrete reinforcement, check for seismic response and human induced vibration, calculate buckling capacities, and can even tell you where you have made mistakes in your model.

As engineers and architects continue to push boundaries with new creations, GSA offers a quick, accurate, and affordable solution for even the most advanced project. GSA has supported a wide range of projects worldwide, including the Swiss Re (London), CCTV Headquarters (Beijing) and Las Vegas High Roller, and has global recognition as one of the most complete packages for structural engineers.

GSA’s easy-to-use interface and customer support mean you’ll be creating and sculpting models in no time. A spreadsheet-friendly file format and smooth interaction with other tools make this software the perfect choice. GSA is BIM (Building Information Modelling) compatible, and also designed to connect with a range of other leading software packages, including Autodesk Revit.

GSA Suite is our most comprehensive structural package, offering all of the GSA variant features, along with form finding and fabric analysis tools for tensile and gridshell structures.

How GSA Suite Works

Input: Create structural finite element analysis models using CAD and BIM links, directly in the table or graphical views, or using your own scripts via the Application Programming Interface. Assign linear and nonlinear materials to a variety of element types, whether beams from catalogues, standard shapes, profiled slabs, or your own special requirements. Add static, dynamic, prestress, or thermal loads and analyse the effect.

Analysis and Design: GSA includes several solvers, including:

  • Form finding for lightweight structures
  • Tension-only fabric material models
  • Steel member and concrete slab design
  • Footfall analysis for human-induced vibration
  • Bridge load optimisation

Finding the correct geometry and prestress forces for tension only structures such as fabric structures, fabric roofs and cable nets is crucial: mistakes lead to wrinkles, flapping, and ponding problems. While some programs will generate geometry that looks nice, GSA will find the geometry that is right. GSA gives you the control to offset the effects of fabric to cable prestress, radial to circumferential stresses, and more.

GSA also enables you to generate the organic geometry for compression-only structures such as grid shells and slender arches.

GSA uses its powerful dynamic relaxation non-linear solver to form find using soap film, force density and structural properties to find the optimum structural arrangement, and then analyse and design it to all the serviceability and ultimate loads.

Form-finding  and fabric analysis – Further Detail

Dynamic relaxation method with the following options

  • Soap film for fabric and cable net structures
  • Force density for cable net structures
  • Applied force for pure compression or tension structures
  • Geodesic, Bar and Free spacer elements for geometry control during soap film form finding
  • Output of new geometry and prestress forces for subsequent analysis

Fabric analysis

  • Non-linear analysis of foils and fabrics
  • Zero thickness elements with optional tension only capacity
  • Combine fabric elements with structural cables and members

As designs become more efficient, the resulting structures get lighter and more responsive to human induced vibrations. This means that footfall induced vibration is becoming an important serviceability design requirement for office and residential buildings, foot bridges and staircases: it is an essential requirement for demanding situations such as hospitals, footbridges and laboratories.

GSA enables you to find the footfall response over the whole structure, with full contour plots and detailed graphs showing exactly where the satisfactory and problem areas are. You can thus explore cost-effective design solutions and advise you client on how their structure will respond to human induced vibration.

Product benefits

  • GSA is the only program available that allows you to analyse any structure for footfall analysis, whether an irregular floor, a bridge or a staircase, whether concrete, steel, or composite.
  • Quick and accurate predictions of resonant and transient response to footfall vibrations, including response factors, peak accelerations, and peak, RMS and RMQ velocities.
  • Define areas of interest on a floor; e.g. the effect of running down a corridor next to an operating theatre

Footfall analysis

Sensitivity to vibration is becoming increasingly significant as advances in structural design result in lighter structures; the lighter the structure the more sensitive it is to induced vibration.

Footfall analysis methods

  • Arup / Concrete centre method – Concrete Centre CCIP-016
  • Steel Construction Institute – P354
  • American Institute of Steel Construction – Steel Design Guide 11
  • Staircase method – CCIP-016 & SCI P354

GSA is perfect for busy foundation designers as it enables you to analyse how your structure interacts with the ground for optimum design. This easy-to-use software combines non-linear structural and geotechnical models to calculate accurate settlements, soil pressures, bending moments and other structural stresses in a fraction of the time.

GSA adds Oasys Pdisp’s soil pressure displacement engine to GSA Suite’s finite element analysis. The structure then interacts with the ground via piles, rafts or pads so they both work together to carry the load, whatever the structure, whatever the soil. GSA also integrates with Pdisp, importing soil models and exports results for further geotechnical investigation.

Calculate the reinforcement requirements for concrete slabs and walls to international design codes:

  • Australia: AS 4100:1998
  • Eurocode: EN 1993-1-1:2005 Eurocode 3 (including French, Dutch, UK, Singapore, and UK fire annexes)
  • Hong Kong: HKSUOS:05 & 11
  • India: ISS 800:1984 & 2007
  • UK: BS 5950-1:2000
  • US: AISC LRFD3, AISC 05 ASD & LRFD, AISC 10 ASD & LRFD
  • South African: SANS 10162-1:2011
  • Generic: Stress check

Results are available in various forms, including numeric utilization ratios and calculations as rich text. The different forms of result available mean that the user can avoid information overload, but can still audit the calculations at a very basic level when appropriate. Utilization ratios can be plotted (contoured) on the model just like any other numeric result, so enabling rapid understanding of which parts of a structure are overstressed or are over designed. Calculation results are marked up in colour to draw attention to problems and important results within the calculations.

Overview

GSA combines GSA structural model with a 3D brick or Pdisp soil model to calculate the soil structure interaction.

  • Direct finite element analysis using brick elements and friction spring interaction elements
  • Iterative analysis using the GSA and Pdisp solvers (does not need the installation of Pdisp)
  • Specify soil properties and locations
  • Specify soil-structure geometry
  • Raft & Pile soil structure interaction

Find how your structure interacts with the ground for the optimum foundation design

The graphics facility in GSA is designed to feel spontaneous in response to the commands of the user. Various single key commands have the effect of producing standard views, adjusting the orientation, scale and content of the drawn structure, windowing, zooming, labelling and annotating the display. Dynamic viewing and animation of results provide powerful tools to aid you in understanding the behaviour of the structure. Graphical output can be sent to a printer or in DXF format for exporting directly to CAD systems.

Hong Kong engineers get go ahead to use GSA 10

Oasys GSA 10 has been pre-approved for use in calculations for steel member design used to support applications for submissions to the Hong Kong government authorities.

As with all such pre-approvals, it still leaves the onus on engineers to check that the program is applicable, that its assumptions are valid for each project and that it is correctly configured. So the pre-approval of software developed by the trusted Oasys team will be welcome to engineers working throughout the Territory.

See the list of pre-accepted computer programs for full details.
