MassMotion: Pedestrian simulation for the most realistic outcomes for every project at your fingertips

Chinese interface and user support now available

How do the professionals shaping our built environment put real people at the heart of their design? The answer is provided by Oasys MassMotion pedestrian simulation, which runs at the forefront of flexible analysis and is consolidating its global technical leadership with multi-language support. A Simple Chinese interface and user support are released this week.

From planning designs of major airports, train stations and stadia through to understanding user experience within art galleries, theme parks, and public events, MassMotion cannot be beaten in its ability to predict crowd flow realistically and accurately within any space that your clients can imagine.

Initially developed for Arup engineers who needed to understand the impact of crowding on major infrastructure projects, Oasys MassMotion is now the most flexible, commercially-available crowd simulation software in the world. From a core engine that simulates crowd flow based on algorithms developed and refined by the Oasys team, the software has added more and more features over time. Responding to the needs of teams working on innovative projects around the world, MassMotion features robust geometry editing and BIM import capabilities, flexible operations and logic modelling, and a wide variety of analysis options, including easily implemented analysis of  vertical circulation. It enables the smartest agents to react dynamically to emerging situations.

MassMotion works by associating imported or created geometry as key elements that virtual pedestrians can understand: such as walkable surfaces, doorways, or stairs. The origins, destinations, and any intermediate itineraries of these pedestrians are then set by the user, and the simulation is run. Movement algorithms and network assessments determine the most logical route for agents to move, with dynamic reactions to crowding and emergent conditions. The aim is to reduce the time taken to model different scenarios and allow for alternative building layouts, populations, or operations to be tested rapidly. From understanding evacuation times to helping design construction phasing, MassMotion can be used throughout the design and operation stages of a project.  A software development kit gives project managers even more flexibility.

The speed and ease with which models are imported or built, and MassMotion’s scalability mean that it is practicable to model anything from a small café to a world expo: people across the world use MassMotion to design spaces, including several transportation and commercial projects in China. It has been used in Asia on a wide variety of projects, ranging from evacuation studies of tall structures, assessments of circulation through malls, airport design and operations, and stadium optimisation and egress studies.
