In February 2026, the Oasys Geotechnical team visited the University of Birmingham to deliver a presentation and practical workshop showcasing the capabilities of the Oasys Geotechnical Suite. The event supported students in developing essential digital geotechnical design skills and gaining hands‑on experience with industry‑standard tools.
Represented by senior geotechnical engineer, Matthew Brown and application specialist, Sissira Pereira, and joined by Arup geotechnical engineers Fiona Hughes and Mike Morrison, the team provided an overview of the full geotechnical software suite, covering solutions for ground modelling, foundation design, retaining walls, and soil‑structure interaction. The session highlighted how digital solutions and geotechnical analysis software are used to improve accuracy, efficiency, and safety in modern civil engineering projects.
Real‑world case study
Fiona and Mike delivered a practical case study demonstrating how Oasys tools are applied to real design challenges. Their presentation showed students how geotechnical modelling software informs engineering decisions, offering valuable insight into digital workflows used in global engineering practices from an industry perspective.
Interactive workshop: Hands‑on software training
The session concluded with a hands‑on Oasys Gofer workshop, giving participants the opportunity to explore the cloud 2D geotechnical analysis software in more detail. Through guided exercises, students learned how to apply Gofer to practical geotechnical problems, making the session an effective introduction to calculation tools used across the industry. The interactive format encouraged active participation, with students testing scenarios, asking questions, and building confidence using the software.

Empowering future geotechnical engineers
With a strong turnout and highly engaged students, the event successfully brought together geotechnical engineering education, digital design insight, and practical software training. Opportunities like this reinforce our commitment to supporting universities and helping students develop the digital capabilities essential for careers in geotechnical and civil engineering.
A special thanks to the University of Birmingham for having us, and to Fiona and Mike for their contribution to an insightful and impactful session.
