We are delighted to announce that Arup and the University of Manchester have been honoured with Innovate UK’s prestigious Golden Award for ‘Driving Innovation for the Future’ at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Awards. The event, held at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester, marked five decades of collaboration and innovation across the UK.
This award recognises the very best of industry-led academic research that has delivered real-world impact. The winning project, developed in partnership with the University of Manchester and funded by Innovate UK, created a novel seismic analysis algorithm in Oasys GSA. This was a true “0 to 1” innovation: starting as mathematical theory published in a PhD thesis, evolving into an algorithm, implemented as a solver, and finally integrated into our structural analysis software suite.

The achievement is even more remarkable given the highly selective process. Each year, Innovate UK funds numerous KTPs, with only a small percentage entering the annual awards. The project first won in 2023, and from that elite group of winners spanning 50 years, Arup emerged as a Golden Award recipient.

Special recognition goes to Computational Scientist, Chris Hickey, whose work on the algorithm and software implementation was pivotal, and many others who championed the idea when it was just a paper in a maths journal. Congratulations to everyone involved in this milestone achievement!
