In this talk Dr. Michael Kinsey from Arup Fire (China) presents an overview of research conducted looking at cognitive biases within decision making during fire evacuations. The talk includes a broad description of decision making theory along how cognitive biases can influence this. A review is then presented which links cognitive biases to known and expected behaviors people exhibit during fire evacuations. Methods for considering how cognitive biases may be mitigated during fire evacuations is then discussed along with how fire engineers may encounter cognitive biases throughout their general work.
