Arup and University of Manchester win Innovate UK Technical Excellence Award

Published 20th December 2023

We are delighted to announce that in collaboration with the University of Manchester’s Numerical Linear Algebra group, we have won the ‘Technical Excellence’ award at the Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Awards 2023.

The joint endeavour, which was carried out via a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, was funded by Arup and Innovate UK. Oasys’ computational scientists and software developers collaborated with the university academics to create novel algorithms that enable rapid and accurate solutions to seismic simulation problems.

Working as the KTP Associate, Chris Hickey developed and implemented the new modal dynamic analysis solvers that are in the process of being incorporated into Oasys structural analysis software. This new solver allows engineers to specify the mass participation requirement needed from modal analysis and can cut down analysis times by only finding the modes required for Response Spectrum Analysis.

The Algorithms and Numerical Analysis team continues to build on this innovation and is working towards techniques to make Response Spectrum Analysis of complex structures faster and more efficient.

A KTP is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership, or a government funded project between a university and a company facilitated by Innovate UK. Currently, there are around 800 KTP’s in progress, each lasting one to three years. At the end of the project, they are graded by Innovate UK, of which the most ‘outstanding’ go on to be shortlisted for the KTP Awards in various categories.

Innovate UK state that, “Partnerships should demonstrate excellence in the application of science, technology, engineering or maths.”

We are thrilled that the work the Algorithms and Numerical Analysis (ANA) team is doing is making an impact within the construction industry. We are excited to see what the future holds for the team and their progress. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists!
