CADpolot

Oasys CADplot review in AEC Magazine
(May/June 2004)

Greg Corke wrote in his conclusion "I rate CADplot very highly. Through its no-nonsense approach and in-house experience as a working design office, Oasys has developed a highly-effective tool to bring DWG's, PDF's and DWF's into the hands of the engineers and architects with a minimal amount of fuss and cost".

Structural Tips & Tricks

Idea

GSA Tip: Default view settings for Graphic and Output Views

The 'View | Save Default View Settings' command saves all model independent settings in the current Graphic View or Output View as your preferred view settings for that type of view. The current settings are saved as preferences and are used as the initial settings for new views in the current and subsequent GSA sessions. For example: open a Graphic View, switch on 'node dots', 'View | Save Default View Settings'; new Graphic Views will then be opened with node dots displayed. More details are given in the online help at 'Working with the Program | Working with Saved Views and Preferred Views | Default View Settings' (or type 'default' in the index).

Idea

GSA Tip: Identifying coincident nodes and elements

'Highlight coincident nodes' and 'Highlight coincident elements' options are available in the 'Graphics | Graphic Settings' dialog.

Idea

GSA Tip: Moments on bar elements

Bar elements are effectively pin ended beams so no moment is carried from a bar into the rest of the structure. However moments are calculated at intermediate positions along bar elements. These are the free end bending moments due to load applied to the bar (e.g. self-weight in a gravity case). These free end moments are based purely on equilibrium, regardless of the properties of the section. (Whereas intermediate displacement calculations do use the section properties, so setting Iyy and Izz to zero results in straight lines joining the deformed nodal positions.)

Idea

GSA Tip: Using CIMsteel files to merge models

You can use the CIMsteel file format to merge two models together. When importing a CIMsteel file into an existing model you are given the choice of retaining the existing data or the imported data where conflicts arise.

Idea

GSA Tip: Analysing models with short, stiff elements

Models containing short stiff elements can cause ill-conditioning in GSS analysis and a failure to converge in GsRelax analysis. In this circumstance Link elements should be used instead of stiff Beam or Bar elements.

Idea

AdSec Tip: Prestress in AdSec 7.3

Enable prestressing in AdSec 7.3 by selecting the prestress advanced feature preference ('Tools | Preferences | Advanced'). Then individual bars can be prestressed with force or strain in the general reinforcement table, as with previous versions of the program. The prestress can then be modified using the prestress factor for individual analysis cases.

GEO 18.0 Release Imminent

GEO 18.0 is undergoing final validation and verification in preparation for a full release. The new version will include significant new features:

FREW: partial factors on material strength or direct factoring of Kp values. Standard sets of factors are included for Eurocode 7, CIRIA C580 and BD42/00. Surcharge factoring can be included and the program outputs both the basic parameters and the factored parameters for each analysis.

SLOPE: soil reinforcement modelling (ground anchors, soil nails, rock bolts and horizontal layers of geotextile). Method partial factors and material partial factors plus inclusion or exclusion of surcharges in pullout calcs are incorporated. The analysis is done in accordance with BS8006. All partial factors are stored in xml file format so that we can reissue revisions for download when codes of practice are revised. User-defined sets of factors can also be added.

Mail Manager

Oasys Mail Manager now available

Mail Manager is an easy to use yet sophisticated Outlook e-mail filing tool. By moving e-mails into file-system folders in a structured way, they can be managed alongside other documents. This simple concept allows all related documents to be kept together and made accessible to those who need them, rather than spread across multiple systems or at worst locked in personal in-boxes, and with its notification tools and enhanced search facilities, colleagues can be kept aware of important e-mails and can find them with ease.

A new version of Mail Manager is now available for download from http://oasys-software.com/mailmanager/

Mail Manager Toolbar

New Features in 3.12

Attachments

Attachment options added to allow you to:

  • Save attachments only.
  • Strip attachments before filing a message.
  • Save attachments and file the message (stripped or un-stripped) as a single operation. Hyperlinks to the saved attachments are added to notifications.

File by folder

When the option is selected you can file all the messages in the selected Outlook folder in one go - great for archiving or re-filing.

Checks for duplicate messages:

When filing a message, Mail Manager now checks for duplicate messages and alerts you if a similar message has already been filed.

Work offline

If you send messages while working offline, Mail Manager will prompt you to file them when you re-connect to your network. The "File It" prompt now includes the sender and subject.

Use Word as your email editor

Supports Outlook's option to set Microsoft Word as the email editor.

Columbus

New Free Columbus

A new free version of Columbus, known as the 'Personal' edition, has been released. As suggested by its name, this is a cut down version of the 'Professional Edition' and is intended for use in non-collaborative environments.

Columbus is one of the most popular applications in its category, having been registered by almost 32000 companies in 181 countries since it was first released in December 1999. It is a combined navigator and viewer that allows you to organise and view data in a more structured way. One of its major strengths is that it combines two powerful viewing engines, supporting over 300 file formats, including Microsoft Office XP, AutoCAD 2004/2005, Microstation V8 and Hewlett Packard HPGL/2.

The differences between the 'Personal' and 'Professional' editions of Columbus are summarised in the following table:

Feature Professional Personal
Views 300+ file formats tick.gif tick.gif
Access network drives tick.gif cross.gif
Access FTP sites tick.gif cross.gif
Issue to FTP sites tick.gif cross.gif
Pack 'n' Show facility tick.gif cross.gif
Redlining/Mark-up tick.gif cross.gif

Columbus 'Personal' edition is free of charge and can be downloaded from the Oasys web site.

Columbus Professional is the fully featured product and is available at £115 for a single user, but multiple licences are heavily discounted. For example, eleven licences cost £69 per user and for high volume purchases can be as low as £17 per user.

For more information about Columbus and to download the Personal edition, please visit http://www.oasys-software.com/columbus/
