User Group Forum 2006

Following on from last year's successful event, we are pleased to invite you to an enlarged Oasys User Group Forum, which will take place in London.

This year we have extended the event to two days, dedicating the first day to our engineering software and the second, a half-day, to our award winning document management software.

Do you have something to share?

Have you done work with our software that you are proud of? Would you be willing to share it with everybody? If so then we would love to hear from you. Don't worry about having to create a large presentation though; a five to ten minute informal chat will be enough.

Why attend?

Apart from the opportunity to learn about the latest features, provided your feedback and network with other users, the events provide you with a unique opportunity to meet the developers, learn about their plans, and guide their thinking.

Register Attendance

For full details and registration for either day, please visit http://www.oasys-software.com/UserForum2006/

Mail Manager Tips and Tricks

What about emails that you don't want to file?

If you send emails that you do not want to file (e.g. "Thanks" or "Cakes in the kitchen"), then they clutter up your Sent Items folder until you delete them manually. Why not create a Mail Manager filing location pointing to your Deleted Items folder in Outlook and file those messages in the "round filing cabinet".

ADC 8.1

The latest version of ADC is now ready for final beta testing with some select customers, with the full release expected shortly afterwards. ADC 8.1 features a host of improvements, including new design codes (such as BS8110:1997 2005) and enhancements to the user interface.

There will be a full preview of the new features at the User Group Forum on May 16th.

GSA

Gatwick Air Bridge

There has been a lot of interest in the Gatwick Airport Air Bridge in the press lately, but did you know that the engineers used GSA to design it? Check out our first case study, which looks at how Oasys GSA was used on the Arup/WilkinsonEyre Gatwick Air Bridge project

GSA 8.1 Patches

As part of our efforts to make things easier for our clients, we now use "next generation" MSI installations that improve the way in which we deliver patches and fixes to you - and it's a smaller download. The GSA downloads page now offers as the "Latest Program Download" the latest build of the current version, including all the latest patches, as a single download. To save you from downloading the same file twice, the date is now included as part of the file name, so you always know if you have it already. The Change Log reports the improvements to GSA as usual.

To find out if your installation is up-to-date, use the automatic version checking from 'Help | About'. Any component flagged as having 'Updates available' has, not surprisingly, available updates. Just download the latest version to be state-of-the-art.

Non-global elevations
How do you produce standard views when your building is an odd shape?
Transformation of Geometry
Sculpt your model into interesting shapes
Applying beam loads along a string of elements
Patch loads that extend off the ends of elements can be picked-up by adjacent ones; find out how.
Interpretation of 2D element results
There are so many options when it comes to 2D elements results, but what do they all mean?

Geotechnical

Very shortly, we will release the latest version of the geotechnical suite, which not only has a raft of general and specific improvements, but also a number of new programs. Two piling programs, Pile and Drive, are released as Beta and Full versions respectively, FrewNodes, a utility program to calculate node positions for Frew is included, and Tunset can now calculate the soil movements caused by mining. If you want to help us by taking part in the beta testing program, please let us know.

Like its DOS namesake, Pile calculates the vertical load carrying capacities of a range of individual piles in a layered soil deposit, whether in frictional or cohesive soils.

Drive is a one-dimensional dynamics program that analyses the stresses and displacements during pile driving.

Are you a Civil or Geotechnical Engineer who is good with software? We are interested in finding an enthusiastic engineer to help us sell our geotechnical software to the growing market. If you would be interested in meeting this challenge, please let us know.

Similarly, we aim to recruit a sales person to sell and promote Mail Manager and Columbus in the USA, this role is not confirmed but we would be pleased to hear from any US residents who are interested.

Oasys Limited, founded in 1976, is the software house of Arup, a global organization of consulting engineers, planners and project managers working in all areas of the built environment, infrastructure, transportation, water, vehicle engineering etc.
