Software Developer (Solihull, UK)

Role: Software Developer - LS-DYNA, Advanced Technology and Research

Overview of LS-DYNA Software:

LS-DYNA is an advanced general-purpose multiphysics simulation software package which Arup continues to develop with the original developers. While the package continues to contain more and more possibilities for the calculation of many complex, real world problems, its origins and core-competency lie in highly nonlinear transient dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) using explicit time integration. LS-DYNA is being used by the automobile, aerospace, construction, military, manufacturing, and bioengineering industries.

Overview of Role:

We are seeking someone passionate about software development to join us in developing the Oasys LS-DYNA Environment (Primer, D3PLOT, T/HIS Reporter, etc). This software is used in the automative, nuclear and civil engineering community. Its primary use is testing vehicle crash worthiness for the automative industry (65%) and object impact worthiness within our seismic, geotechnic and building specialisms. The position offers software development and interaction with end users, both internal and external to Arup. The role involves working within a small, friendly team based in our Midlands Campus working and is based within our Advanced Technology and Research practice.

The post holder will take responsibility for particular functions within the software, including some new functions that the post-holder will develop, as well as contributing to the general development effort (e.g. debugging, testing, and contributing to the design of new features). Currently, new interfaces are being developed to enable the software to be used more broadly, an example of this is within computational fluid dynamics. The role also includes some customer support of the products with which the post holder is familiar.

The post holder will liaise with other members of the software development team who are working on the same products. The team is led by an Associate Director and a Director, with whom the post holder will be in daily contact.

The post-holder will have regular contact with other members of the Advanced Research and Technology Group within the UK, Japan, India, China and the USA and external clients who are users of the software. The post-holder will also have contact with customers, for example answering support questions, and at meetings to understand customer needs.

Requirements:

  • Good first degree in IT, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or similar discipline.
  • Software developing ability is essential. It is desirable that C and Fortran are known however training will be given from within the team if required.
  • Display a logical approach to solving physical problems.
  • Ability to see a problem from an end users prospective.
  • Previous knowledge of LS-DYNA or other finite element / computer simulation packages is desirable but not essential.
  • Understanding of computer simulation software desirable but not essential.

The role would suit an engineer who has moved into the software developer environment, a mathematician or software developer who is interested in the automative industry or solving physical problems.

Job Description:

We are looking for a suitable professional, with an experience of 3-6 years in the field of Automotive CAE and with an aptitude for solving complex engineering problems.

The selected individual will be based in our Hyderabad office and will report to the Leader of the sales & support function based at Hyderabad.  This is an ideal role for someone who is comfortable to work on their own with limited guidance, independently learn new technologies and enjoy multi-tasking to solve customer issues.  The selected candidate is expected to

  • Provide technical support to customers on all aspects of using LS-DYNA and Oasys software.
  • Offer technical advice to customers on FE modelling and simulation.
  • Build example models for different applications of LS-DYNA.
  • Communicate ideas and results both by oral and written communication to a variety of individuals.
  • Provide training to customers.
  • Meet prospective customers and establish good relationship.
  • Work on consultancy projects if required.

Job Requirements:

The applicant should have;

  • Strong engineering and problem solving skills

CAE Engineer (Shanghai, China)

Role: CAE Engineer

Location: Shanghai, China

Job profile:

Our rapidly growing Advanced Technology + Research group in Shanghai is currently recruiting CAE engineers to work on forthcoming vehicle programmes, structural analysis projects and to provide support for Oasys and LS-DYNA software. Our engineers can expect to receive excellent training in CAE methods, and opportunities to travel to the UK and the USA. They will be responsible to the group manager in Shanghai and will be expected to communicate regularly with our UK head office.

The successful candidate will receive training from an experienced foreign engineer and will have the opportunity to play a key role in the development of our CAE service and automotive business in China. We are looking for young professionals with 2~3 years of experience in crash simulation using LS-DYNA.

Responsibilities:

  • Use LS–DYNA finite element analysis software to perform structural analysis of civil structures and vehicles
  • Provide recommendations to improve the structural design of models
  • Prepare technical reports and deliver presentations to clients in Chinese and English
  • Work at customer sites when required
  • Visit customer sites to set up software and give software demonstrations
  • Support LS-DYNA and Oasys software customers in China
  • Translate technical documents between Chinese and English
  • Ensure all design and modelling information is treated in a confidential manner
  • Liaise with other Arup teams in the UK, Japan and US to clarify or resolve customer problems

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Mechanical Engineering degree or related discipline (minimum score 80%).
  • Must be proficient in the use of Ansa or Hypermesh and post-processing software.
  • Required skills: 2-3 years of use of LS-DYNA in the industry.
  • Understanding of vehicle engineering, materials and manufacturing processes.
  • Understanding of seismic design of structures or knowledge of multibody dynamics and fatigue analysis a definite advantage.
  • Microsoft Office literate using Excel, PowerPoint, Project and Word.
  • Fortran/C Programming skills and experience using Unix/Linux is an advantage

Person specification:

  • Chinese National required.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and use initiative to solve problems.
  • Ability to work in a team, follow instructions; pick up new software quickly and solve problem independently.
  • Willingness to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

Language Skills:

  • Fluent in English and Chinese, can read and write effectively in English
  • Excellent oral communication skills
